San Francisco
Waterfront: Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square, covering
about half a dozen blocks along the
waterfront, constitute much of the stereotypical San Francisco image and
together are perhaps the most popular things to do in San Francisco. Tourists walking here are entertained by street performers and tempted by souvenir shops and restaurants. The Golden Gate Bridge: is an engineering marvel. Not only is it one of the city's most enjoyable things to do, but it's also one of the most−photographed sights in the world. A walk on it is a must. Alcatraz: the former prison, wasn't always a place people wanted to go, but today it's one of the city's most popular sights. Reserve your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Union Square: one of the city's three original parks, is now a public space atop a multi−level underground parking garage and ringed with elegant shops and hotels. The Powell cable car line begins about a block away, and the theatre district is nearby. Cable Cars are often called San Francisco's moving landmark. Chinatown: expresses what Western architects thought Chinese buildings should look like. Lombard Street: the "Crookedest" Street is neither the crookedest street in San Francisco nor the steepest, but it's surely the best−known. The "crooked" section is the block below Hyde Street. No car to drive down? Take the cable car to Hyde and Lombard and walk. Coit Tower: atop Telegraph Hill offers panoramic bay and city views, and a bit of San Francisco in the 1930s preserved in its murals. On the Ocean and Bay : Sausalito, just across San Francisco Bay, has some of the best views of San Francisco in the area. Take a ferry over, browse a few art galleries and have lunch or dinner at Spinnaker, one of my favorite area restaurants. Cliff House, on Ocean Beach. has been a San Francisco standard since 1863, when the first Cliff House was built. Today's version is the fourth restaurant to stand on this spot. |

; No data Zion NP ; park protects an awe−inspiring cliff−and−canyon landscape and wilderness. The canyons and rock formations of colorful sandstone, the hot rocky deserts, and cool forested plateaus are all the result of powerful geomorphic processes and erosion. Massive cliff walls tower half a mile above the green canyon floor. To truly appreciate the magic of Zion, one needs to walk among its towering cliffs and explore its small narrow canyons. Zion’s unique sandstone cliffs range in color from cream, to pink, to red. The Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is a 6−mile route along the canyon floor, ending at the Temple of Sinawava, where the canyon narrows and a foot−trail continues to the mouth of the Zion Narrows, a spectacular gorge with walls 12–30 meters wide and up to 300m tall. From early April to late October, a free shuttle bus serves the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. Private vehicles can only take the road during the other months of the year. Other roads in Zion, for example, Route 9 which traverses the park from east to west, are open to private vehicles year−round. Other areas of the park also offer outstanding scenery. The eastern side of the park is served by the Zion−Mount Carmel Highway, which passes through the Zion−Mount Carmel Tunnel and ends at Mt. Carmel Junction. The eastern area’s notable features include Checkerboard Mesa and the East Temple, and one of the more popular hikes, the Canyon Overlook Trail. West of Zion Canyon, the Kolob Terrace area features the Subway, a famous slot canyon hike, and Lava Point, which rewards visitors with spectacular views of the entire area. The Kolob Canyon section, further west near Cedar City, features one of the world's largest rock arches, Kolob Arch. |

Escalante ; No Data Bryce Canyon NP ; Covering 145 km², Bryce Canyon National Park is located in southwestern Utah. Despite its name, it is not actually a canyon, but rather a giant natural amphitheater created by erosion of the eastern flank of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. The result of this erosion are delicate and colorful pinnacles called ‘hoodoos’ that can reach up to 60m in height. Their distinctive pink, red, and orange hue adds to the magical quality of the landscape. A series of amphitheaters extend more than 30 km within the park. Bryce is at a much higher elevation than nearby Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. The rim at Bryce varies from 2400 to 2700m. Most visitors tour the park using the 29 km scenic drive, which provides access to 13 viewpoints over the amphitheaters. There are also eight marked and maintained hiking trails throughout the park, all of which can be hiked in less than a day. The highest point in the park, Rainbow Point, can be reached via the scenic drive. From here, the Aquarius Plateau, Bryce Amphitheater, Henry Mountains, Vermilion Cliffs, and White Cliffs can all be seen. The park is open year−round. |

Monument Valley ; Situated on an Navajo Indian Reservation on the Utah/Arizona border. There is only one main road, U.S.163, which links Kayenta with U.S.191 in Utah. While state highways traverse the valley, the most scenic locations are within Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a Navajo Nation equivalent to a national park. The twin buttes of the Valley ("the Mittens"), the "Totem Pole" (although the Navajo did not actually build totem poles), and the Ear of the Wind arch, among other features, have developed iconic status. The stark beauty of Monument Valley has formed the backdrop to many famous movies, especially westerns, television commercials, and countless music videos. Visitors can pay an access fee and drive through the park on a 17−mile dirt road. Since Monument Valley is on tribal land, it is not part of the U.S. National park system, so it is not marked on many road maps as prominently as are National Parks, and on some maps it is not marked at all. |

The canyon, created by the Colorado River over about 6 million years, is 446 km long, ranges in width from 6.4 to 24 kilometers, and attains a depth of more than 1.6 km. The South Rim is the most accessible part of the park and is open all year. The Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles but can be visited with the free shuttle bus from the Village. Allow at least two hours roundtrip. Views of the river at Hopi, Mohave, and Pima Points. The Desert View Drive, a 25 mile scenic one−way drive, is accessible by private vehicle.
